There's one thing that the Reds and Blues can both say - they're both getting the media shaft. Oh, I know I've harped on the cable news guys for a long time, but I do think they are letting us all down because we're just not getting any meaningful discussions. I can watch cable news at five - and anticipate everything that's going to pop up on all the shows that follow with the exception on Olbermann and Greta. I don't count O'Reilly because his stories, although sometimes different, are way too tabloid for my tastes.
What strikes me more than the repetition of material is the way all the so-called headliners are playing it safe. Predictably the common wisdom now is this clap-trap about Republican values bringing people to the polls, when if fact "values" brought most everyone to the polls. As a Democrat, I believe my values trump Republican values every time and we could argue forever about which value is better, war or peace, especially when I tend to think of Iraq as an unjust war of greed and my Republican friends might view it as a war of hope and freedom for an oppressed people. So, the real struggle is not between values and no values, but one of competing values and perception. This time, Republican values won.
Now, how about this for a value? Let's make everyone with a first-class education walk around with a big Azure E stitched on his/her chest, (shades of Hester Prynne, in case you need the reference to follow me). Ahhhhh the shame of having an elitist education!! Well, if it's so hand-wringing awful, just exactly what are the goals of all this "no-child-left behind" propaganda Bush speaks of (out of the side of his mouth)? What WILL the Republicans do when the all the munchkins have elitist educations? Ah, I see Red Babies turning Blue around about 19 years of age!! Now you know why Republicans have been noticeably ineffectual in education reform for the masses. No Child Left Behind inflexible testing is geared to give the haves an even further leg up, while leaving the disadvataged students in the dust, but, mark my words, Repubs might get more than they bargained for. BTW, didn't Bush go to Yale? His daughter, Barbara? Yep. Yale. I didn't seem her being packed off to Bob Jones.
Stay tuned - coming up is my question of the millennium -
Does God Put Souls in Petri Dishes??
