Presidential Debates 2004

Today is a downer for most political junkies. The stage is dark and all that. No more can we anticipate the outcome of the Stymie in Miami, Hooie in St. Looie (courtesy of Keith Olbermann) and Tempest in Tempe.

The verdict is in: Kerry 3, Bush 0; but the cowpoke from Texas isn't gonna be headed to boot hill any time soon. Though I'm no fan of the Gunslinger from Dry Gulch (he of the prep-schools, summer homes and cheerleading school at Yale), I'll admit he hung in there - after that first debate, if I were George, I would still be hiding under a rock like a de-fanged rattlesnake.

These guys who run for high political office are something else. I admire Bush and Kerry for having the courage and confidence to walk onto a stage where bullets are flying; the chance of taking one in the gut is dang high. I give them both credit for truly believing in the rightness of most of their own convictions. As a country we need to honor the good fight they've put forth in the debates - remember the world was watching and for that reason alone I didn't want Bush to under perform the way he did in debate #1.

When our President looks foolish, our country looks foolish, and so I say that I'm grateful that George Bush acquitted himself with some dignity last night. Will I vote for him? Well, that won't happen until Phoenix becomes a rain forest, but at least I give him props for not self-destructing.
